if timetable isn't a concern, try Priceline and bid on your fare....start at the lowest reasonable amount and see what happens. you're not charged for the ticket until an airline approves the bid. the only things to consider are that your flight could be early morning or an evening flight, also Priceline charges a service fee so you'll need to factor that into your bid.

I'm a traveling bee because of work.. it depends on where you will go. If you go to Far East, call a travel agent in China Town, they always give you the best deal because of competition out there. If you plan for a domestic trip, then go to expedita.com or orbitz.com... if you go Europe, call local travel agents.

Priceline is great if you don't care what time you leave or get back, I've gotten a quote of $1100 on the airline site and bought it on priceline for $400 an hour later. They usually give you early morning flights or late night arrivals, if that's an issue just book a day ahead and you're there in plenty of time.
