Sign up for netsaavers on american airline's website. They are so cheap and they go all over. there are different specials every week.
I would first get an idea of prices from a travel consolidator website like: a. Orbitz.com, b. Hotwire.com, c. Kayak.com.
I would then call the 2 or 3 airlines and negotiate for best price or travel package using the prices you got from the above websites.
If I did not get a satisfactory response from the airlines, then I would approach a travel agent to see if that person could get a better price for me than the above 3 websites. You may have to pay for an agent, but if they can beat the prices listed on the above three websites, it may be worth it in savings to you.
Sometimes, you can negotiate a very good price on priceline.com, for travel pakages or individual flights, but you have to be very flexible and offer a reasonable starting bid by knowing what the "market" will allow. Priceline will not accept any outrageously low bid. It would have to be close to the market average.
